Study
The MG experience in setting up innovative financial tools shows that
for creating successful initiatives is necessary:
- to fully exploit synergies with local players and relevant stakeholders
- to provide invested companies with an integrated set of services
to accelerate their growth
The Feasibility study is carried out according to the indications provided
by the client and/or stated in the existing regional Innovation strategies/Single
programming document. The preparation of the study is based on the following
activities:
- Technology and innovation context analysis
- Identification of the most promising, in terms of capability to
support the spin-off/spin-out creation, sectors
- Identification of potential fields of intervention for innovative
financial tools
- Setting up of a business plans evaluation system aiming at assessing
investment risks
- Benchmarking exercise with existing good practises
The fund is designed with respect to the existing national and European
laws. MG takes also part in the fund raising process, presenting the fund
and its strategy to potential private and public investors. If required,
MG applies for FEI start- up facility
Fund Management
As a seed fund Management Company , MG offers the following expertises:
Market Due Diligence: The selection of viable enterprises
starts from a market due diligence which is based on preliminary screening
of the business idea (quick scan), interviews with the business plan proponent(s)
and then on an in-depth business plan evaluation (market test)
Investor readiness seminars: MG organises capacity building
seminars for assessing companiesâ investor readiness to:
- evaluate the readiness of the business venture with reference to
potential investors to attract relevant sources of funding;
- provide SME with indications on strengths and weaknesses of the
business venture;
- identify actions to improve chances of Company of securing financial
support:
SMEs assessment is done using AIR, the Investment-Ready Benchmarking Audit
Tool Software developed by META.
Economical and financial Due Diligence: MG as a Fund
management company provides to the invested companies the following services:
- short training courses on entrepreneurship
- hands on master classes on business planning
- and short life-long training initiatives on specific business matters

development of regions, acting both as a consultant and project manager
in international projects and as service provider in trans-regional, regional
and local projects.
MG takes part in few selected National and International Networks aiming
at exchanging of experience on innovative financial tools that can be
transferred to other regions suffering from a lack of informal capital.
Joining those networks helps MG in gaining practical information about
technical and management questions related to new financial tools and

FIRST, Innovation Fund for Umbria and Tuscany Region
Downstream to the RITTS study, the DG XIII launched an initiative to develop
the topics selected with RITTS in a trans-regional framework: TRIP Applicom
Project: seed funds for Knowledge based start öups.
The consultancy aimed at defining - within a partnership among Umbria,
Toscana, Hamburg and The South Coast Metropole öa seed fund to support
start ups with high growth rate. The Seed Fund has been integrated into
the Umbria and Tuscany ongoing Single programming Document (Docup 2000-2006),

Executive planning for an Innovation Fund in Umbria
The assignment aimed at the executive planning, according to the international
standard stated by FEI, of a risk capital fund and at defining a business
plans evaluation system.

MG is in the process of managing, together with relevant regional financial
intermediaries and banks, a seed fund aiming both at supporting Knowledge
based companies in their start up phase and innovative business ideas
which can be turned into new ventures.
The Fund invests into company risk capital as a minority and temporary
shareholder. It can also provide guarantee to the above mentioned beneficiaries.
MG invests into the Fund.

challenge for growth-oriented SMEs: The Crescendo Thematic Network addresses
this issue by capitalising on the experiences of its members and drawing
on the experience of other initiatives, particularly the other Thematic
Networks operating under the aegis of the Innovating Regions in Europe
(IRE) network

Feasibility study for a risk capital fund in Sicilia
META Group collaborates with Gepafin, Europrogetti&Finanza and Mediacamere for the realisation of
the feasibility study for the creation of a risk capital fund in Sicily.
META Group is in charge of: analysing the demand of innovative financial services of the local SMEs;
collaborating for the setting up of an instrument for the assessment of the business projects, and of
realising a scouting pilot project inside the sources of knowledge (universities and research centres).

META group in partnership con Oxford Innovation developed, for an important Italian Banking Group, a
feasibility study addressed to the cost-benefit analysis of the creation of a new "Innovation Unit".
Such unit is responsible for attracting and winning over non traditionally bank customers (universities,
spin-offs, technology based start-up) through the supply of financial and innovation services.

Ingenium, Venture Capital fund for companies from Emilia Romagna
The venture capital fund aiming at supporting the start-up and development of academic spin-offs
and new companies in Emilia Romagna is managed by META Group in joint venture con Zernike Group.
The fund, which can finance innovative startups with the temporary acquisition of capital quotes, has
an overall capital of 7 million euro; 5,3 offered by the Region and 1,7 by the managers.

AIRE, Actions supporting Investor Readiness in Enterprises
Within the European project AIRE, META Group has designate, with a panel of international investors, a
methodology and an informatic support system for the assessment of the readiness of the companies to
finding investors. The system can be used either by the companies as an instrument of auto-diagnosis,
either by the intermediaries as a tool to individuate possible intervention sectors.

FinNetSM€, Network for Regional SME Finance
The "Network for Regional SME Finance" (in which META Group participates with Gepafin and Finanziaria
Regionale) is composed by 20 institutions amongst banks, public financial institutions and agencies
supporting regional SMEs. The project aims at analysing the financial instruments available at local
level in order to develop new models able to come over the problem of the equity gap present in each
region.
