SUSTAINOW aims to develop a series of open-access tools that make it easier for planners, policymakers, and developers in Europe to design and manage offshore wind farms sustainably from start to finish. By improving how marine data is shared and used across countries and sectors, the team aims to better understand and tackle the impacts of offshore energy on the environment, society, and coastal communities. The goal: offshore wind projects designed to work well for people, nature, and energy networks.

Open access tools to improve how marine data is shared

SUSTAINOW is working to make offshore wind planning more sustainable and user-friendly by improving how marine data is shared across countries and sectors. Through a shared cross-border marine data platform, stakeholders gain better access to environmental, social, and technical data, while an evidence-based siting tool will help identify the most sustainable and technically suitable locations for offshore wind farms. Complementing this, the project design tool will support holistic planning by assessing environmental, social, and economic impacts across the entire project life cycle. Together, these open-access tools provide a practical solution for more informed, efficient, and sustainable offshore wind development.

Running from November 2025 to December 2028, SUSTAINOW is funded by the European Union through the Horizon Europe Framework Programme and CINEA. The University of Aalborg is coordinating the consortium that includes Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, Danmarks Miljøportal, University College Dublin, ifeu – Institut für Energie- und Umweltforschung Heidelberg gGmbH, Vestas, Blue Grid Lda, Roheplaan OÜ, Tecnoambiente and META Group.
