Improving the quality of life

We are living longer than ever before, and more than half of the EU’s population is expected to be over 65 by 2070. But as we age, we need to make sure that we age well, that we are healthy, happy and engaged older citizens.

The Active Assisted Living Programme aims to develop products and services for improving the quality of life. This can make a real difference in people’s lives, from those facing the challenges of ageing to those helping them. Every year, the Programme provides grants to around 20 innovation projects that focus on a range of topics, such as healthcare, mobility, security, leisure and ICT. Since 2008, more than 220 projects have been funded.

AAL2Business

However, making the transition from laboratory to market is not always easy, and that’s why META has stepped in to help. META has signed a contract to deliver AAL2Business services for the next three years, which will help innovations that support a healthy, happy and engaged elderly population achieve market success.

For the next 3 years, META, in partnership with the Agency for the Promotion of European Research (APRE) will:

  • Implement 6 editions of the Lean Startup Academy, which shows early-stage AAL projects how to better define their business model;
  • Implement 6 editions of the Go-To-Market Launchpad. The aim is to support more mature AAL projects in pitching in front of investors/customers or to prepare a crowdfunding campaign;
  • Create and manage a network of local contact points in all AAL Countries, which will aim to circulate useful information on local markets, players, funding.
The projects will learn from expert coaches and business mentors (experienced European entrepreneurs) and benefit from the networks established.

Notes on the AAL Programme:

The Active Assisted Living (AAL) Programme is an initiative co-funded by the European Commission and some EU Member States (Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, and Switzerland).

The AAL funds projects that work towards creating market-ready products and services to improve quality of life. Each project consists of SMEs, research bodies and end-user organizations.
